Douglas Thiel's “Forgiveness: Another Philosophy Novel” follows the life of Petie Jones, an Ashland, Kentucky boy about to turn 18. He was wrongfully accused of a sex crime by a disturbed father. When he is released without an arrest, he decides to volunteer for the draft during the Vietnam War to escape his dysfunctional family life. However, due to enlistment shortfalls, Petie is assigned to the Marine Corps.

After spending two years in the Marines, the last of which was in Vietnam, Petie joins the LAPD to avoid returning to his estranged father. After an officer involved shooting he is assigned to the detective bureau and begins taking evening college courses. He gravitates towards philosophy that fosters the introspection to frame his journey to understand the nature of forgiveness for things pass. He also develops a relationship with his philosophy professor who was a former Catholic priest who left his position to become married. In their conversations, they discuss the problem of evil that caused Petie to lose faith in a higher power as he endured his Vietnam experience.

“Forgiveness” also uses the character of Petie to explore physical and emotional resilience. This philosophy novel will let readers relate to actual historical events starting with the Vietnam War and continuing through the world of civilian policing during the 1970's through the 1980's and beyond.

“Forgiveness” has received praise from a number of independent book review publications for its thought-provoking, philosophical narrative, emotionally intense character development, and its honest treatment of the themes of violence, justice, free will, and forgiveness. In one way or another, the philosophy novel is somewhat a spiritual encounter with oneself; reading about Petie's trials provides the most discerning readers with moments of reflection and interior listening.
