Joby Aviation (NYSE: JOBY), a leading developer of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has announced a new collaboration with L3Harris Technologies aimed at advancing the use of autonomous hybrid eVTOLs for defense missions. The partnership will focus on adapting Joby’s innovative air taxi technology to meet the needs of U.S. and allied military operations.

The companies plan to combine Joby’s expertise in electric propulsion and low-noise, high-performance aircraft design with L3Harris’ experience in mission systems, autonomy, and defense-grade communications. The goal is to develop a next-generation platform capable of supporting a variety of military applications, including logistics, personnel transport, and potentially uncrewed operations in complex environments.

JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation, stated that this collaboration represents a significant step in expanding the versatility of eVTOL aircraft beyond commercial urban air mobility. He emphasized that hybrid and autonomous capabilities could enable longer-range missions and operational flexibility for defense customers.

L3Harris executives highlighted the opportunity to leverage emerging eVTOL technology to create cost-effective, sustainable alternatives to conventional military aircraft for certain mission profiles. The companies expect to conduct feasibility studies and explore prototype development under potential future defense programs.

This partnership aligns with the growing interest in electric and autonomous aviation solutions for both civilian and defense markets, aiming to deliver more efficient, quieter, and environmentally friendly aircraft for a wide range of operations.
